Get involved with the Shine School Media Awards

If students at your school work on a media project, new or ongoing, such as a magazine, newspaper (in print or PDF), podcast or website, chances are it is already eligible for the annual Shine School Media Awards.

We accept projects large and small from across the UK, with the minimum criteria being just one of our categories – and the competition is free to enter.

Register for the competition here

So we can get to know you, your plans and your project, we ask that a project leader, usually a teacher or Head of Department, drop us an email at shine@stationers.org.

Once that is in hand we will quickly acknowledge receipt and your Shine journey will begin.

We will keep you fully up-to-date with what is happening with regular emails as well as providing support materials such as video interviews with fascinating people in the journalism industry and beyond.

To enter, you will need to produce the best possible edition of your entry –

  • a magazine or newspaper (in print or as a PDF)
  • podcast or audio recording as a hosted link, eg SoundCloud or as an MP3 file
  • a website address

If you have any questions or need help, just email us at shine@stationers.org.

Download and fill out our 2023 entry form

Our entry form contains a page for each award, but remember, you just need to enter one category to be eligible.

We try and keep the form simple and easy to fill out, but inevitably we are keen to know as much about your school and project as possible. If you’re unsure about anything, just let us know.

In addition, the Copyright Licensing Association have kindly provided us with helpful guidance on dos and don’ts around this important issue:

Where do we begin?

If you’re keen to work on a Shine project, but aren’t sure where to start, or want help with getting organised, this website has extensive guidance written by our judges to help steer you in the right direction across a wide variety of topics.

We cover everything from bringing your team together as an editor, writing a fantastic piece of journalism, design and photography, best practice with copyright to the finer points of sub-editing.
